Résumé :
Cette étude réalisée par la Société Française de Phlébologie ayant déjà été présentée et publiée [1, 2], nous présentons cette communication sous forme d'un « Extended Abstract » en précisant les complications observées après sclérothérapie à la mousse.
Summary :
The expansion of foam sclerotherapy (FS) has been significant these past years. However the precise incidence of untoward events with this method is not known.
Objective : To specify and analyse the actual incidence of immediate and delayed side effects and complications of FS.
Methods : A multicenter prospective registry was established in 22 phlebology clinics to report their activity and complications observed during 8 weeks.
Results : 12 173 sessions of sclerotherapy have been carried out, 3 695 with foam, 5434 with liquid (LS) and 244 using both. 37 (37/6395=0,58 %) incidents/accidents have been reported in the group treated with FS and 12 (12/5434=0,22 %) in the group treated with LS : the difference is statistically significant (p = 0,0025).
- 16 (16/6395=0,25 %) patients described visual disturbances in the group treated with FS and 4 (4/5434 = 0,07 %) in this treated with LS : the difference is significant (p = 0,0234). All resolved shortly without sequelae.
- 9 thrombotic complications (9/6395=0,13 %), but only 1 deep venous thrombosis, have been reported in the group treated with FS, and none in the other group (p = 0,005).
Conclusion : This study shows that FS causes few untoward events (less than 0,6 %, all regressive without sequelae). However these complications seem more frequent after FS than after LS. Therefore FS requires a proper training and must be cautiously carried out.
